This suite for euphonium and piano was originally written for horn and piano.
Here you can listen to the horn & piano version performed by the composer:
I - Sharp-Flat Paradox
This movement was born from the idea, “is it possible to write a short piece using only sharps and flats?”. In the version for horn, it contains only sharps and flats, following their respective order. Although these elements are not as evident in the euphonium version, they follow a cycle of fifths.
II - Seventh Rêverie
In this movement, the euphonium presents a melody with an improvised character, while the piano plays different major seventh chords, following the circle of fifths. The section from measures 11-16 features a written improvisation following the circle of fifths and can be repeated ad libitum with real-time improvisation.
III - Overtone Groove
This movement also has an improvised character, but this time with swing. Instead of chord symbols, fingerings corresponding to harmonic series following the circle of fifths are presented. The 413 and 4123 series were deliberately excluded as they would be too out of tune. In these measures, the piano takes the lead in the groove. In the repetition of measures 5-16, improvisation is invited: just improvise using the indicated fingerings and everything will fall into place!
IV - Hunting
Finally, a movement inspired by hunting music, with fast passages where you only need to move one finger.
In short, this is a small suite that explores idiomatic writing for the instrument. I hope you enjoy it!
