This work was commissioned by GMS - Brass Quintet to celebrate its 35th anniversary. For this reason, it begins with majestic motifs and fanfares accompanied by a repeated note that passes through different instruments. This repeated note is intended to create a sense of movement and symbolize the continuity of GMS’s artistic work. In the central section, there are small written improvisations that may optionally be transformed into real-time improvisations, aiming to showcase each member of the ensemble. Finally, the initial idea is resumed, now reinforced with jubilation.
The title “The Other Shore” naturally refers to the south bank of the Tagus River, where the town of Seixal is located. Although situated opposite Lisbon—the capital, filled with a vibrant arts scene—Seixal is not “on the sidelines” and also boasts a rich musical culture, supported by local associations and communities, among which is GMS.
