Por norma estudos avançados para trompa costumam ser demasiado difíceis. Este é o 1º de um conjunto de 3 livros de estudos que escrevi para trompa que abordam modos e escalas não muito habituais nos estudos para trompa, bem como algumas técnicas e efeitos especiais. Tudo isto em estudos fáceis em que várias dificuldades não sejam misturadas, se o estudo for difícil ou mesmo muito difícil em alguns aspectos, terá que ser simples noutros e acima de tudo em todos eles está sempre presente uma grande componente rítmica e bastante diversão.

Dois anos, depois da primeira edição, foi lançada uma segunda edição dos 12 Estudos Jazzísticos para Trompa. Cada estudo inclui agora um título e foram feitas pequenas correcções. Foi tomada esta opção por me aperceber que seria difícil identificar cada estudo e poderia fazer confusão com os volumes seguintes que estão para sair (Exemplo: 1º estudo dos 12 estudos, 3º estudo dos 10 estudos etc....). Assim sendo cada estudo possui o número mas agora também um título:

“ ''12 Etudes" by Ricardo Matosinhos fill a gap in the horn etude repertoire that has long needed attention. Complex rhythms have seldom received the attention that pitch has in the repertoire, but these etudes provide the player with many rhythmic problems that an advanced player needs to master to be ready for contemporary repertoire, including odd meters, unusual note values, metric modulation, syncopation, displaced rhythms, unusual subdivisions, and extremes of tempo. But rhythm is not all that is addressed in these etudes. Matosinhos also touches on quarter tones, trills, ghost notes, low register, extreme leaps, atonal writing, glissando, stopped notes, and transposition. The etudes are compact studies of most of the difficulties one might encounter in contemporary writing. There is nothing else like them on the market, making them a must-buy for the advanced horn player. “

"On his website, ricardomatosinhos.com, the composer says, "Usually advanced studies for French Horn tend to be too difficult. This is the first of three etude books for Horn on modal scales not very usual in horn studies, as well as some extended techniques and special effects." Further, in the Preface, Matosinhos adds, "In these etudes I used different scales and modes with some extended techniques, but always in an easy and funny way; if an etude is difficult or even very difficult in one aspect, it will be easy or even very easy in others." It is not surprising that these etudes are dedicated to Arkady Shilkloper. They are designed, however, not to practice jazz but to become more familiar with jazzy harmonies and rhythms, as well as Arkady-inspired extended techniques.

Over the course of these twelve etudes, players will encounter rhythmic challenges, less familiar scales and modes, quarter-tones, stopped technique, multiphonics, and a variety of interval combinations that make them seem really difficult at first. In his introductory notes, the author describes these challenges individually, along with a Glossary of notations. He also describes the aspects in each etude that are "easy and even very easy;" for example, using a limited range of notes or how some etudes can be played entirely with only two fingerings... and it's true! Even advanced players will have to be patient as they negotiate these etudes, but I like not only the range of challenges but also the problem-solving skills they encourage. There are some jazzy elements, particularly in some of the scales and modes chosen, but the challenges apply to all styles of music. To legitimize his goals, Matosinhos has posted a few video examples on Youtube, linked from his website - they are possible! The inspirations from Arkady in these etudes are easy to hear, and fun to work on, whether studied systematically or individually.
